Do I really need this?

How consumption can be made more mindful

Despite overflowing closets, something always seems to be missing. New items regularly end up in the shopping cart, often spontaneously, sometimes out of boredom. But instead of the desired satisfaction, there remains a vague feeling that consumption isn't really helping.

In a world of abundance, regular purchases, be it clothes, technology, or home decor, have become the norm. This raises a crucial question: Do we really need it? Or is it a reflex, a quick dopamine hit, a habit, a substitute for real gratification?

Mindful consumption. What does that mean?

Mindful consumption means making conscious choices. It's not about absolute abstinence, but about thoughtful action. Consumption is never neutral; every purchase ties up resources: time, money, energy or raw materials.

Helpful reflection questions before buying:

  • Would the item be replaced if it were lost?

  • Would it be worth buying today?

  • Will it still be in use in a year or already forgotten?

The invisible costs: Possessions demand attention. Every item needs space, care, and organisation. The more you accumulate, the greater the effort. Those who consciously limit themselves regain clarity, focus, and free time.

Make consumption more conscious: A wish list with a waiting period (around 7 days) can help avoid impulse purchases. During this time, it often turns out that the wish wasn't actually a real need. Alternatively, things can be borrowed, swapped, or bought secondhand.

A sustainable lifestyle: By making your consumption more mindful, you not only protect your own budget, but also the environment and resources. The change takes time, but it changes a lot: priorities, outlook on life, self-perception.

Every purchase is like a new stone in life's backpack. Consciously choosing which stones to take along makes the journey easier, clearer, and more fulfilling. This creates space for freedom, meaning, and what is truly needed.
